Hello Opponauts, I come to you with good news and a request. The good news: We’re trying to fix the comments. The request: Tell us about your internet setup that’s yielding such a problematic
user experience.
Please answer these questions if you are having issues with the comments not loading properly:
Are you on mobile or desktop? If the latter, PC or MAC?
Which internet browser are you using?
Are you using adblock fo some sort? What is it?
Optional: What’s your !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ?
Also, if you don’t mind, just describe in a sentence what issue you are having
.
(You have to refresh the page for it to work? Or does it not work at all? etc.).
Our new EIC has an old Willys, so you know he’s good at fixing things.

3. None
4. No idea.
The comments section usually just shows up as the three blinky dots, I usually have to re-load the page, sometime multiple times.

across all main sites, the comments won’t load if I simply scroll down to where they should be. I see the three “throbbing” dots as if they’re supposed to be loading, but they don’t. however if I go back up to the top of the article and click this thing:
it’ll send me down and I will see comments.
Desktop, PC, Chrome, no blockers whatsoever. On Xfinity, so somewhat fast.
edit: I never have a problem with comments on user blogs like Oppo.

2. Chrome
3. No
4. 200 mbps
I generally have to refresh the page at least once to get the comments to load on a frontpage article the first time I read that story. Comments seem to load for the most part for that particular story after that.

I’m using Chrome on both a Windows PC and an iPad and am getting the same three dots until I refresh multiple times. There is no Ad Blocker on the iPad and it’s turned off on some of the GMG sites but it behaves the same. My internet speed is approximately 300Mbps.

I’ve suspected it may have to do with adblockers, but there’s no way I’ll visit

Comments frequently don’t work work for me (especially with my adblocker on (so maybe you don’t care that much, though I do buy things from Kinja Deals!) In any event, to answer your questions:
Desktop (PC)
Chrome (81)
AdBlock Plus (I have issues sometimes with it off, but it works much better than having it on in general, I keep it off for group blog sites like Oppo that don’t have invasive ads)
Fast.com tells me 50Mb/s (I’m bottlenecked by a powerline network).
For an example, with my ad blocker on I went to the newest Jalopnik post, clicked “Start this discussion” (sometimes this shows up even when there are already comments, but here there were none showing), the button disappeared, but no ability to create a comment showed up. More commonly you click and don’t get anything.
Additionally I have a long-standing issue even with the adblocker disabled that If I’ve clicked Pending and then Show P ending (why can’t this be one step?), it will show at most four replies to any top level comment. Clicking on C ommunity will give you the option to show more after those, but of course then the pending comments won’t be there. Essentially it makes it impossible to view all pending comments if there are more than four replies to a top level discussion comment.
Also re: Ad Blocking, I would like to have it off to support you guys, but any time I try I run into issues with invasive ads (obviously the terrible Farmer’s campaign that led to the fall of Deadspin was the worst), and even scam ads that redirect to shady sites. This was a year and a half ago, but I’ve seen similar stuff much more recently:
I’d be much more likely to leave ads on if they didn’t auto-play audio, crush performance, or try to compromise my computer! I know some people are freaked about tracking as well, but honestly I’ve done enough work in the ad sector to believe that ultimately they’ll track you anyway unless you really cripple your web experience.

Hi David! I believe the issue with comments is primarily with Firefox on all platforms (Mobile, Windows, Linux, Mac). Most people say that Chrome seems to work fine (not sure about other browsers)
, but on Firefox, comments require MANY refreshes before they appear correctly (or at all), though they do seem to randomly load correctly once and awhile.
In my case, latest version of Firefox, connection is Cable at 100mbps, no adblock.
I’d contacted Kinja support about it awhile back and they said they weren’t able to do much at the time due to COVID causing a lack of staff:
There is an issue with adding pictures to comments as well...sometimes they don’t attach correctly or sometimes they attach in duplicate (or triplicate!). Not sure if THAT is just a Firefox issue or not though (Firefox is the browser I use).
Thanks for reaching out man! :)

Comments only load when I click on the comments bubble thing at the top of the article, like Jimz shows. No amount of refreshing works. Problem persists on ALL gizmodo sites, not just Jalopnik.

Comments section doesn’t load on all Jalopnik pages (three dots of doom) unless I reload the page or click the comments button at the top of the article. This happens across multiple computers and browsers. Chome w/AdBlock Plus (acceptable ads off because Jalopnik has those horrid Taboola clickbait things) or Brave. PC is my usual browsing (Win 10) but I just checked on Brave on Android and I have the same result.

I don’t really have trouble with comments. Though every now and then when pasting in a photo there are 2 that pop up, one in the text which can be deleted and then one that gets the proper inserted photo arrangement that the comments get.
Side note: Old Oppo/Jalop you used to be able to click on a photo in the article or what ever you were commenting on and it would bring that photo into the comment for you to talk about. I miss that function especially in photo heavy posts. One can copy and paste, but that can be a bit clunky and chunky like I mentioned above.

I don’t know if its related to the commenting system or not, but I’ve drastically cut back on my visits to the FP just because it loads so slow and bogs down when I scroll, and, yes, the comments often don’t load at all, and it sometimes times out when you try to post one. None of that happens on Oppositelock at all.

On safari for Mac or iOS, I get the same thing everyone else does. No comments appear on first page load. Sometimes they do upon a reload, and usually they do when you click the comment icon at the top of the article. No add block on iOS, I’ve tried with and without on Mac. Internet speeds range from poor cell reception to 500mbps hardline. The issue is too widespread to be anywhere but on the kinja backend somewhere.
Edit: in addition, at least on iOS, comments load much more often on older articles, even from last fall. Something was broken in the last 6 or so months and is attached to all new posts.

Another of the issues is the “Show Pending” comments function that doesn’t work properly anymore (it has been at least 6 months since there is this issue) : Clicking on “Show Pending” hides the “Show more replies in this thread” line .
It also does seem to sometimes it displays edited messages on their pre-edited version (happened to me on this page on the “JimZ (Remove all internal rinds)“ @ 5/07/20 4:06pm message : The “ edit: [...] ” part was not shown anymore when in “Show Pending” mode ) but it seems to “fix itself” after a few minutes so it might be a cache issue and not highly problematic .
I am having this issue using Opera and Firefox on Windows 10 and Linux (i am using uBlock with them but even if disabled it doesn’t solve the issue) and also on Opera on Android.
I have 1Gbps.

ps: the main comment bug (loading bug) seems to be happening more on Firefox than on Opera (which uses the same Javascript engine as Chrome).

I think comments work well on mobile, but I am frankly, afraid to visit on mobile during the day due to the auto loading videos (that play on mute).
Also, the twitch stream of Andrews the other day (which I liked!) auto played with volume when you went to the post.
Also, I do want to support Jalopnik, some better merch from the store would be cool!

Really farking fast? T3 line at work, cable modem at home.
Sometimes ads will get through that crash the browser, leading to the infamous “ Aw, Snap!” page. This happens on both mobile and PC, more frequently on one of the front pages than on Oppo. Sometimes Kinja just hangs when trying to post a blog post or a discussion item. In discussions, I usually solve it by selecting everything I wrote, copying it, refreshing the whole page, starting a new reply, pasting the copied text/images and hitting Publish. In new posts, I try to save the post before publishing. I’ve had to use the same trick, but sometimes when I refresh the page, it recovers the post I was working on.

Well personally, I got shadowbanned a while back for calling out an author who posted an article glorifying a driver committing multiple ridiculous law violations and I’ve been in the greys since, despite asking to get back out multiple times. I know I wasn’t the only one calling it out, as the article was later edited to include the usual platitudes about not breaking the law, etc.
But, the only reason I go to the main page anymore is your articles and Andrew’s truck stuff, so...?
Regarding commenting, what happens for me is I get the 3 dots endlessly. I use chrome, on both windows computer and android phone. LTE service, or through my wifi. Wifi speeds are usually around 150 down. Reloading the article sometimes works, sometimes doesn’t.

I visit the FP in three different environments :
Mobile : Android 10 / Chrome 81 no AB
PC : Windows 10 / Chrome 81 AB
PC : RedHat 7
/ Firefox 68 no AB
All are online via cable modem 95MB up/10MB down
In all cases, the already mentioned comments not loading. Just the 3 pulsing dots, unless I go back to the top, and following th e comments link. This method frequently takes more than 1 try.
O n mobile, if there are lots of comments (200+) , the ‘show more comments’ stops working after 3 or 4 expansions.
On RH7 w/o AB, if I leave the window open more that ~15 minutes it freezes. Won’t scroll, and the ads are all blank.
Following links from the notifications (all three environments) is a crap shoot. Frequently is just opens the article, goes to the bottom, loads nothing. Not even the three pulsing dots.

Desktop, windows 10, firefox, 100mbit down. If I am lucky and refresh the page (without cache, so control+f5 ) about half a dozen times there’s a ~ 25 % chance I’ll see comments. Links from notifications (“xxx replied to your post”) take me to the comment but the CSS is broken or something because it’s all distorted and doesn’t work to star or reply . Again here refreshing a few times usually will get it to load properly to be able to leave a reply.
This reply is coming to you from my work computer (shhh) since it (desktop, win do ws 10, chrome, on my same home internet) doesn’t seem to have any issues loading comments.
I’m sure the advertisers love all the extra page views from everyone refreshing the page a bunch of times trying to see comments. Talk about a conflict of interest.

Thanks for doing this, David. ( Making this comment using Edge because I can’t get OPPO comments to load in Firefox.)

2 Firefox (latest version)
3 All plugins turned off, and FF Enhanced Tracking Protection turned off

2 Chrome
3 All plugins turned off
4 20 Mbps (DSL)
Comments will load, but if it’s a longer
article with a decent number of
comments, there are so many ads trying to load, my laptop gets hot, the
fan kicks on the and battery starts tanking. It’s just not a pleasant experience browsing Jalopnik when the ads are so intrusive and overbearing to the point that my computer goes into overdrive
. I would not be surprised if user experience is
the primary
reason
that readership has dropped so far so fast in recent months.
1 Mobile - iPhone
2 Chrome
3 none
4 40 Mbps
Comments will load, but if it’s a long article with a couple dozen
comments, at some point there are so many ads trying to load that it becomes unusable. Either new comments won’t load, or it could take minutes to try to comment with a simple response (like seconds for each letter to show up when typing)
. The BEST articles on Jalopnik are the longer, in-depth ones with lots of comments. Not being able to participate in a great
discussion because of all the ads loading is so frustrating...
Anyway, hope you & Rory are able to make some headway on getting things to improve. Thanks again.

Using a burner account (though it’s been the same one since 2014 or so, so “burner”s probably not the right word).
On mobile: iOS13.1 (but it’s been the same since 12) using Safari. Adguard adblocker, but it’s no different whether that’s turned on or off
I am unable to log in to Jalopnik no matter what settings I try on my phone. This is a Jalopnik (and maybe other main sites: dunno, don’t try) issue ,not a Kinja-wide one, since I stay logged in permanently on Oppo and it logs me in happily enough on the odd occasion I need to.
At least 3 out of 4 visits, I am unable to see the comments at all on Jalopnik - I just get the three dots for ever. Reloading or clicking on the comments icon at the top of the article doesn’t help, it’s a “come back later and try again” job.
On desktop (Win10 but it was the same on Win7), using either Chrome with Adblock or Brave (with no 3rd party adblocker)
The same Jalopnik-specific inability to log in as above. I can’t persuade Brave to let me in at all, and Chrome will only do it if I disable both Adblock and every single privacy or security setting I can find, which oddly enough I’m not keen to do. Maybe once every few months, I will find I’m logged in when I open the tab - presumably this is related in some way to me being logged in on Oppo. This has been the case for at least 2 years - it showed up on Windows before iOS. There is comment elsewhere in this thread that this issue is related to enabling cross-site cookies - my experience has been that that alone won’t fix it.
The same “three dots” issue as above also crops up (on both browsers) but it’s less frequent: maybe only 1 in 10 visits.
If I can successfully login and see the comments, I don’t have any difficulty with reading them. Although you could usefully get rid of the discrimination between “Staff” and “Community”, given that most Jalopnik staff engage with the comments little enough that the Community threads are 95% of the content.
When mak ing comments (or psts on Oppo - same issues apply) , there are some problems with loading images: image loader causes my browser to run massively slowly on PC, and ge tti ng image orienta t ion sorted out usually requires deleting exif data. B ut overall it’s an OK experience.
On the subject of adblockers, BTW: Jalopnik was what caused me to load an adblocker in the first place, as the level of invasive ads makes the place unusable (particularly on mobile with a data cap). It’s bad enough that given the choice between turning off adblocking and not visiting, I wouldn’t visit. Given just how bad the no-adblocker experience is, I expect many if not most of your users are adblocking: you no doubt have stats on that.
I- and I’m sure many others - would be happy to enable ads if they were kept to a tolerable level: we understand what keeps you guys in business. It’d be worth your masters’ while trying an experiment of pulling the ads into check, making a big point of telling people you’d changed and asking them to unblock, and seeing what happened - you might well find net ad revenue increased.

Hi David, thanks for doing this.
Desktop: Mac, Firefox, Adblock Plus.
Oppo runs fine most of the time, but I sometimes have to refresh the page in order for comments to load, sometimes twice.
On Jalopnik the comments never load the first time, I have to refresh usually twice, sometimes more before they load. A few times they haven’t loaded at all.
Mobile: iPhone 6S, Safari. Comments load fine, but I can’t log into my account on
Jalopnik, only on Oppo. There used to be ridiculous issues with laggy typing in the mobile editor, and impossible to use formatting, but that seems to mostly be fixed now....sometimes still happens

That Twitch stream autoplayed with volume when you were on a different Jalop posted and scrolled past the comments so the “infinite scroll” bs kicked in. I was very confused for a little while, because it started at a moment that Andrew wasn’t saying much, just driving around. LOL

Oh you mean the ability to see and make comments. I thought you were asking about the comments themselves! I stopped going to Jalopnik ages ago due to the 'quality' of the commentary and the user experience of the site itself once all the advertising landed (especially on a low speed and high ping internet service like ours)

I use Chrome on my iPhone, and whatever the hell the Silk browser is on my Kindle. No ad blockers, except for whatever may be native to the platform I’m using. A lot of the time I only get the three dots, sometimes when I hit the speech bubble at the top of an article, it will load comments, sometimes I still just get the three dots. I only visit Jalopnik, so it is the only site I can comment on. Strangely, the comments loaded immediately here!

Hey David, thanks for doing this!
1. MacBook Pro 2010 High Sierra 10.13.6
2. Firefox
3. uBlock Origin
4. 50Mbps Down, 7.23Mbps Up WiFi
Issue: Comments sometimes don’t load first page click, need to click comment bubble or page refresh
__________
1. iPhone 11 Pro 13.4
2. Google App
3. No
4. Same WiFi speed above.
Issue: Comments don’t load unless I scroll to next article or click comment bubble. Sometimes multiple refreshes or scroll down still won’t load the comments.

On Jalopnik and Gizmodo the comments don’t load if I scroll down a post. Mac, PC, iOS. Safari, Edge, Chrome. Ad block (ad block pro on Mac and Win, although all these sites are whitelisted) or not, they do not populate at all. Refreshing doesn’t bring them up either. The only way I can load them is to go to the top and click the talk bubble icon and then they come up. Oppo works about 75% of the time first time.
I have 850mbps down and 30 up.

I’ve lost track of what’s a glitch and what’s bad design. Things keep changing for the worse, and the frustration gets so bad that sometimes it’s just too exhausting to even bother commenting .
One of the things I miss the most is the ability to load all comments at once. Not just “load five more comment threads ” . I mean ALL comments. Kinja used to have a button for this, and i t was incredibly useful for finding comments that I was about to make, tha t someone else already posted, so that I could star their post and maybe contribute to that particular conversation.
Somewhere along the line it stopped working and I had to resort to using a browser extension to load all comments. Then something else changed, rendering that browser extension useless.
After that, t he quickest way to load all comments was to scroll to the bottom of the screen, hold your mouse over the “load more comments” button and alternate between clicking it and hitting the “end” key on my keyboard to scroll to the bottom of the page again where the buttonw ould line up with your mouse again . But that method was thwarted by the endlessly-frustrating “Infinite S croll”...

It really feels like there is a concentrated effort going on to sabotage the comments by making them harder to get to. There’s a pointless “show more replies” button that has to be cleared before you can get to the “load more comments” button. And even some of the articles themselves (not just the comments) are getting obscured with a stupid “continue reading” click-me bar. (I see this a lot on video posts.)

Are you on mobile or desktop? If the latter, PC or MAC? Win- 10 PC desktop
Which internet browser are you using? I’ m using Opera. I was using Chrome and gave up because the pages would load less than 50% of the time
Are you using adblock fo some sort? What is it? Not with Opera (was using Adblock with Chrome)
Optional: What’s your internet speed ? 100mbps
Issues: signed in with Opera:
- if I’m the first commenter, I can’t get the comment window to open when I click “start the conversation”
- if I click “load more comments” at the end of the comment stream, nothing happens, I have to scroll back up to cl ic k on the “community” or “staff” bubb le to get the blue bar “show more ”
- if I enter comments and “publish” it never refreshes, just greys out my comments and waits
What do I want ? For non-mobile use, how about you just load all the comments, no “show more” or “load more” options. And if you keep the “show more or load more” options how about actually loading ALL the remaining comments, not dribs and drabs of a couple at a time? I know it’s asking a lot, but it USED TO WORK this way, just put it back to how it used to work and stop ruining the user experience

On Firefox 76.0 64-bit in W indows 7, comments have about a 5% chance of loading for the first Kinja article I look at, and never work at all on any subsequent articles I look at. If I want to look at comments I copy the link and fire up Chrome (Version 81.0.4044.138 (Official Build) (64-bit)) and comments appear most but not all of the time.

1. I use on both mobile and PC.
2. On mobile, I use Safari (iPhone). On my old phone, I used Chrome (Android). On my PC, I use FireFox, Chrome, or Edge, depending on how saucy I’m feeling.
3. I don’t use any adblockers except what is native to the browsers.
4. Unknown. I get different results whenever I test.
On to my Kinja experience....
On Safari and Chrome on my mobiles, all comments load seemlessly. However, I can only comment on sub-blogs such as Oppo from mobile. For main blogs, I cannot log in- the Kinja header only shows the silhouette but never lets me log in. Repeated results yield no improvement.
On PC with FireFox, I can log in and comment on sub- and main blogs alike. However, it frequently takes multiple loadings and refreshed to view the comment section. My gut feeling is that this is related to the infinite scrolling feature.
On PC with Chrome, comments almost always load first time and I can comment.
PC with Edge (mal)functions similarly to FireFox.

Okay, I’ll play. Desktop, PC, Win7, Chrome, Adblock Plus.
Comments only show the three throbbing blocks unless I reload the page or click the talk baloon.
When I do get comments, only the first “page” shows up. Load More Co mments does nothing. Clicking Community does nothing except make the Staff/Community button disappear.
If I try to reply, it’s more throbby blobs. Sometimes I get a success message, sometimes not. Sometimes my comment shows up, sometimes not. But if it’s not among the first batch I wouldn’t see it anyway. God forbid I should reply to two comments, that just borks the whole thing.
Start The Discussion doesn’t work at all. The button disappears.
I assume all this is deliberate to generate page reloads and therefore “views.” I’m about to just come to Oppo and ignore Jelopnic, because Oppo works. As you know, or you’d have put this on Jalopnik.

PC. Firefox (75.0). Cookies allowed. Cross-site Trackers allowed. Everything else blocked. I don’t use any Ad-Blockers. Internet speed: Between 20-300 mbps.
The biggest problem I have is that the comments don’t show up at the bottom of the article unless I refresh the page. It usually takes 5-50(NOT EXAGGERATING) refreshes to load the comments and it doesn’t matter which Kinja site, they all do it.
Looks like this. ^
Also as a side note with this setup the autoplay ads everyone complains about don’t autoplay for me, which is okay with me.

Two different desktops, both Intel processor-based PCs. One running Windows 10, one running CentOS 8 (Linux)
Which internet browser are you using?
Problem occurs on both Chrome (primary) and Firefox. The Chrome behavior is the three flashing dots symp tom everyone else reports.
Are you using adblock of
some sort? What is it?
No adblock on either machine currently .
Optional: What’s your internet speed ?
Broadband, 94 megabits per second tested for download. Bandwidth is not the problem.
As someone else noted the problem does not seem to occur on Oppo, but it definitely does on Jalopnik, Jez, The Root, and the Takeout.

There’s no clear way out of the greys on any of the sites throughout the Kinja-verse. Give people a map to the accepted ranks, that’s all. It really sucks to see so many shit-posters and low-effort-whores getting out of the Greys on some sites while those of us that just want to contribute have no idea why we’re still sitting in the mud.
Just to be clear, I am not in the g rey on Jalopnik, but here on Oppo I am. I know I don’t come to Oppo much, but part of that is being in the greys because actively contributing is half the fun here.

Almost every article, either on Oppo or Jalopnik, tends to load but without comments. Clicking on the article title again can SOMETIMES reveal comments.

Comments don’t work for me at all on mobile. I appear as a non-logged in state, and I can’t log in. But I’ve figured out a little trick which is that if I click on an editors name, I show up as logged in and can check notifications. It’s strange, and frustrating.
On a PC, I don’t have many problems with the comments, but I do have a big problem with all the ads. The pop-ups are particularly irritating. What is this, 1999 again?
Oh, one more thing; I’m grey everywhere except Jalopnik. I know why too; I had the nerve to say that Gawker publishing a certain celebrity sex tape was not necessary for the news story, and that it was inappropriate . Well we all know how that turned out. But I guess that opinion was unpopular at Gawker Media and now I’m in the grey all the time, even though I’ve been commenting on these sites longer than any writer or editor has been employed here....

When typing a comment using an Android phone and Chrome, often times if I decide to go into the body of what I typed already to edit what I wrote , the words after that will get scrambled/switch order/get deleted. It’s been doing that since I started using kinja in late 2013, across multiple Android phones.

Hi David! Thanks for reaching out to survey users.
From my experience, here’s the responses to your questions:
Are you on mobile or desktop?
If the latter, PC or MAC? Both - I routinely can’t get comments to load on my laptop (PC) or mobile (iOS). I will say it seems to generally work a little better on the PC.
Which internet browser are you using? Google Chrome on PC, Safari on iOS
Are you using adblock fo some sort? What is it?
Nope, I’ll let you guys get paid :)
Optional: What’s your internet speed ? Fiber - generally clocks around 850 down / 850 up.

4. Not sure. 42 MPH? 17 cubic barleycorns per nautical mile? Some Google online internet test speed thing says this:
Apparently it’s very fast. I’ll have to check this next time GF, Daughter and I are all online with web conferences.
I find that if I click on the headline, comments won’t load (just get the repeating three dots). If I click on the thought bubble on top , it will reload with comments.

1. Sometimes I’m on Mobile, sometimes on Desktop. Sometimes I’m on an IOS device, sometimes Windows 7, sometimes Windows 10, sometimes Ubuntu, sometimes Xubuntu.
2. Chome, Firefox or Safari.
3. The adblock that comes built in with the Chrome browser on Ubuntu/Xubuntu. No adblock on the windows systems. Adblock doesn’t appear to be the issue in my case.
4. Depends on where I am. Generally at least 15mbps.
My experience during the worst times when comments wouldn’t come up, it was the worst on Windows 7/Firefox. I could refresh the page 20 times and the comments wouldn’t come up . Ubuntu and iOS were typically a little better... might only have to refresh a few times . In the past day or two, things are much better on all devices.

Also if your screen rotates on mobile (iOS) the page formatting is fucked up (300%(?) zoom on the left most third of the page and is solved by a refresh that reopens Pandora’s box of ads and popups
